Blue Angels F-4J Phantom II — BuNo 153079

Own an authentic piece of Blue Angels history from one of the most legendary aircraft of the team’s Phantom era.

The McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II was among the most powerful and recognizable fighters of the Vietnam era. Its unmistakable silhouette, thunderous engines, and remarkable performance made it an unforgettable chapter in the history of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

Our aircraft, F-4J Phantom II Bureau Number 153079, has a particularly remarkable history.

One of only 13 Block 27 F-4Js manufactured, BuNo 153079 entered service in the late 1960s and went on to serve with the Blue Angels in four different positions: Blue Angel #7, #2, #4, and #1. During its years with the team, this aircraft performed before audiences throughout the United States and on the international airshow circuit.

An Iconic Moment in Blue Angels History

In 1971, while flying as Blue Angel #4, BuNo 153079 participated in one of the most memorable photographs in Blue Angels history: a spectacular six-aircraft formation of F-4 Phantoms flying past Japan’s majestic Mount Fuji.

This extraordinary image was featured on the Blue Angels’ official 1971 season poster and remains one of the most recognizable photographs from the team’s legendary Phantom era.

The Aircraft’s Final Flight

On March 8, 1973, BuNo 153079 was serving as Blue Angel #1, flown by LCDR Don Bentley, when it was lost in an accident involving three Blue Angels Phantoms. Fortunately, all pilots successfully ejected, and there were no fatalities.

Vehicle History

History of the F-4J Phantom II

Developed by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri, during the 1950s, the F-4 Phantom II was originally designed as an all-weather, carrier-based interceptor to protect U.S. Navy fleets from enemy aircraft. First flown on May 27, 1958, the powerful twin-engine, two-seat fighter featured advanced radar systems, missile armament, and speeds exceeding Mach 2.

The Phantom II quickly proved to be one of the most versatile military aircraft of its generation. Adopted by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, it served in air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions, becoming one of the most recognizable American combat aircraft of the Vietnam War.

The F-4J was an improved naval variant featuring upgraded radar, avionics, and combat capabilities. From 1969 through 1974, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flew the F-4J Phantom II, captivating airshow audiences with its tremendous power, distinctive silhouette, and impressive performance.

With more than 5,000 aircraft produced, the Phantom II remains one of the most celebrated military jets in aviation history.
